2017 Schweppes Boroondara Cup
The Boroondara Cup (Men) and Classic (Women) was held at Green Acres on Sunday 5th March.
There was a quality field with over 90 men and 11 women. Approximately 25% of the field had handicaps of less than 0.
The 2015 Champion Blake Collyer (Metropolitan GC) bolted out of the gates and was leading after Round 1 with a 4 under 67.
Collyer was 2 ahead of Konrad Ciupek (Victoria GC) and Kyle Michel (Shepparton) and 3 ahead of 2014 Champion James Bannan (Rosanna).
Defending Boroondara Classic Champion Shanaiah Fernando gave herself the best chance of defending her title with a 1 over 74.
Fernando was 3 ahead of Kew Member Joana Donelly and 4 ahead of Stephanie Bunque (Victoria) and India Matthews (Metropolitan).
Michel made his move in the afternoon, he caught fire and was 7 under through 11 holes. He dropped 1 shot on the way home but posted a fantastic 6 under 65 to post a total of 8 under. Collyer managed to get it to 7 under however came unstuck at the 14th hole where he made a triple after multiple short game errors. With no other challengers presenting, Michel recorded a 5 stroke victory. Congratulations Kyle!
In the Classic, Fernando looked like she was going to have an easy time defending her title however a double bogey at the penultimate hole saw her slip to 5 over for her afternoon round which gave her a total of +6. Bunque was making a charge on the back with a few birdies and an eagle. She was +7 playing her last hole (9th) and needed a birdie to force a playoff however her putt agonizingly slid by the hole which gave Shanaiah the victory!
